The Attorney General’s Office in Libya announced that the Tripoli Criminal Court has sentenced a man to 12 years in prison for his involvement in the kidnapping of Tunisian migrants in 2019.

According to a statement from the Attorney General, the defendant was found guilty of abducting 14 Tunisian nationals. The kidnappings were carried out as part of an attempt to pressure Tunisian authorities into releasing a detained individual implicated in criminal activities in Tunisia.

The court ruling also permanently stripped the convicted individual of his civil rights, emphasising the severity of the crime.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Libya, where criminal activities such as kidnappings and smuggling persist amid a fragile political and legal framework.

This verdict reflects Libya’s efforts to address crimes committed within its borders and signals a commitment to maintaining law and order, despite the complex challenges the country faces.

The Attorney General’s Office reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring justice and safeguarding the rights of all individuals residing in Libya, including migrants and foreign nationals.
