The Arab League has welcomed the appointment of Hanna Serwaa Tetteh as the new United Nations envoy to Libya, expressing confidence in her capabilities and expertise.
Jamal Rushdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, issued a statement on behalf of the organisation. He said, “We welcome the decision of the UN Secretary-General to appoint Tetteh as his representative in Libya and as head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The Arab League trusts her expertise in leading the mission to achieve its objectives under the mandate given by the Security Council.”
Rushdy added, “Aboul Gheit looks forward to enhanced cooperation and coordination between the UN and the Arab League during Tetteh’s tenure. This collaboration aims to support dialogue among Libyan parties, advance national reconciliation, and unify institutions. The Arab League remains committed to its responsibilities toward Libya to preserve its unity, sovereignty, and freedom from foreign interference.”
Tetteh, a former Ghanaian Foreign Minister (2013–2017), brings extensive diplomatic experience to her new role. The Arab League’s endorsement underscores the importance of unified international and regional efforts to stabilise Libya and support its path towards peace and development.
