Boldrini: “Migrant Shelters in Libya Have Turned into Torture Headquarters”

Former Speaker of the Italian Parliament, Laura Boldrini, confirmed that migrants in shelter camps in Tripoli were being subjected to abuse, violence, and torture.

In press statements, Boldrini indicated that the reports by humanitarian organisations, and the United Nations have proven claims that elements from the Libyan Coast Guard were dealing with human traffickers. The reports also noted that the armed conflict in Libya has caused the deaths of both Libyans and migrants detained in these camps.

Boldrini also stressed her rejection of Italy’s support for the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA). She demanded that Italian support should be through demining operations, support for civil society organisations, vulnerable people, internally displaced people and victims of the conflict.
