A fire broke out on Monday in a settlement housing Sudanese refugees in Kufra, southern Libya, causing significant material damage but no reported casualties.

Firefighters from the Civil Defence Department managed to contain the flames, with support from the Emergency and Ambulance Services in Kufra and other security agencies in the city.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire was likely caused by unsafe electrical connections, which led to an outbreak of flames in the area. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage.

Kufra has become a key transit point for thousands of Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Many have sought shelter in Libya, hoping for better conditions or the opportunity to cross into Europe. However, the situation remains dire, with refugees facing poor living conditions, lack of basic services, and legal uncertainties.

Local authorities and humanitarian organisations have repeatedly called for urgent international assistance to address the growing refugee crisis in Kufra. The lack of adequate infrastructure, medical services, and sanitation facilities has put refugees at serious risk, with many living in makeshift camps under harsh conditions.

The recent fire incident has raised concerns about safety measures in refugee camps, highlighting the urgent need for improved living conditions and better emergency response mechanisms. Aid agencies have urged Libyan authorities and the international community to step up humanitarian support for the displaced Sudanese population in Kufra.
