Italian Democratic Party Leader: Europe’s Inconsistency Has Exacerbated the Libyan Crisis

The Deputy Leader of the Italian Democratic Party, Andrea Orlando, said on Friday that the worsening crisis in Libya is due to the inconsistent policies of the European Union countries.

Speaking to a public television channel, Orlando said: “many Libyan problems have also resulted from how Europe moves asymmetrically as well as using different strategies.”

“I think the need for a joint initiative at the European level imposes itself at the present time,” stated the leader of the party, a partner of the 5-Star Movement in the ruling coalition, noting that the issue is not only related to Libya but also to Tunisia.

Civil war broke out in Libya after the toppling of long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, who was later killed by militants. Numerous militias are fighting for power and influence in the country, with Tripoli-allied militias backed by Turkey, Qatar and Italy. Meanwhile, eastern-based military commander Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army is backed by the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, France and Russia.
