On Thursday, Italian Ambassador Gianluca Alberini and Consul General Francesco De Luigi visited Benghazi to discuss areas of economic cooperation, infrastructure development, and the establishment of direct flights between Benghazi’s Benina International Airport and Rome.

During their meeting with Al-Siddiq Omran Boujouari and Yousef Al-Zawawi, Director of the Chairman’s Office at the Benghazi Steering Council, discussions focused on enhancing aviation connectivity, revitalizing economic partnerships, and supporting reconstruction projects.

The officials explored technical support for restoring historical buildings and advancing the Rebuild project, which aims to train and develop local expertise. Italy reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Benghazi’s redevelopment efforts and encouraging Italian companies to return and invest in various sectors.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) projects, emphasizing coordinated efforts for reconstruction and long-term stability. Italian representatives praised Benghazi’s cooperation with the Italian Consulate, while Libyan officials welcomed Italy’s support in aviation, trade, and infrastructure.

With both sides committed to strengthening ties, discussions on direct flights, private sector collaboration, and investment opportunities mark a significant step toward economic recovery and stronger diplomatic relations between Libya and Italy.

The visit comes at a time when Libya is seeking greater international investment and engagement, particularly in the eastern region, which has been recovering from years of conflict. Benghazi, as Libya’s second-largest city, is positioning itself as a key economic hub, and Italy remains one of its most significant international partners.
