The United States Embassy in Libya has reiterated its commitment to supporting the Libyan people’s aspirations for a unified government, single leadership, and a national army capable of safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and securing its borders.

In a statement marking the anniversary of the February 17 Revolution, U.S. Special Envoy and Ambassador Richard Norland, alongside Chargé d’Affaires Jeremy Berndt, extended congratulations to the Libyan people, honoring those who fought for freedom and the right to determine their country’s future.

Ambassador Norland emphasized the United States’ continued support for Libya’s transition to a stable, democratic state through the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL)-facilitated political process.

“We stand with the Libyan people’s aspiration for a unified government, one leadership, and a single army that can protect the nation’s sovereignty and ensure border security. The United States remains committed to working with Libyan and international partners to overcome obstacles to successful, nationwide elections,” Norland stated.

His remarks highlight Washington’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to support Libya in breaking its political deadlock and moving toward a functioning, legitimate, and democratically elected leadership.

The statement reflects the U.S. government’s broader strategy in Libya, which includes supporting efforts to unify Libya’s fragmented institutions, ensure the departure of foreign forces and mercenaries, and build a professional, non-partisan military.

Libya has been struggling with political divisions and security challenges since the 2011 uprising, which led to the ousting of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi. The country remains split between rival administrations in the east and west, while efforts to hold nationwide elections have repeatedly stalled due to disputes over electoral laws and governance structures.

The United States, alongside the United Nations and other international partners, has been advocating for a political resolution that would lead to free and fair elections as the only way to restore legitimate governance and stability in Libya.

Washington’s renewed support for a unified Libyan government aligns with broader international efforts to help Libya rebuild its institutions and establish a stable security framework. The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli has consistently urged Libyan stakeholders to engage constructively in UN-led mediation efforts, stressing that Libya’s future stability depends on national consensus and inclusive political dialogue.

As Libya continues to navigate its complex political and security landscape, the United States remains a key partner in promoting diplomatic solutions and reinforcing the Libyan people’s right to self-determination.
