The African Union (AU) has officially announced that Libya will host the 2026 African-Turkish Summit, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the North African nation.

The decision was made during the 38th AU Summit, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 15-16 February, according to a statement issued by Libya’s Presidential Council.

The statement highlighted Libya’s successful diplomatic efforts during the summit, led by Presidential Council head Mohamed al-Mnifi, which secured the country’s selection as the next host.

Hosting the summit is seen as a major step towards restoring Libya’s regional influence after years of political instability. The council emphasised that Libya’s past contributions to economic, political, and sustainable development cooperation in Africa played a crucial role in its selection.

The statement further noted that this decision represents renewed international recognition of Libya’s strategic importance, reaffirming its role in strengthening dialogue and cooperation between Africa and key global partners.

The AU, a 55-member organisation established in 2002, aims to enhance integration among African nations and promote economic cooperation. Libya’s hosting of the African-Turkish Summit reflects its efforts to reassert its leadership within the AU and engage in broader geopolitical partnerships.

With Libya preparing to host the fourth African-Turkish Summit, expectations are high for further expanding trade, investment, and diplomatic relations between Turkey and African nations.
