On Saturday, Libyan Minister of Local Governance Badr Al-Din Al-Toumi met with Nicoletta Giordano, Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Libya, to discuss strengthening cooperation on migration management and community stability.

Their discussions focused on joint initiatives to support migrant reintegration, enhance municipal capacities, and promote sustainable solutions for migration-related challenges.

During the talks, Al-Toumi emphasized the sensitivity and complexity of migration issues, noting that they impact multiple sectors and require a coordinated, well-structured approach.

He also highlighted the importance of closer collaboration with IOM, both to improve migrant support systems and to address public concerns about migration. Strengthening the ability of local municipalities to manage migration effectively was a key priority in the discussions, with an emphasis on ensuring long-term stability and development.

For her part, Giordano presented an overview of IOM’s recent projects in Libya, stressing the need for greater alignment between the organization’s efforts and national policies.

She proposed several new initiatives, including disarmament and reintegration programs, enhanced protection services for migrants, and capacity-building projects for municipalities. These programs, she explained, could help stabilize communities by integrating migration policies into broader development strategies and reducing the pressure on local resources.

Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening technical coordination, ensuring that proposed initiatives are carefully assessed and implemented effectively.

By enhancing cooperation between Libya’s local governance structures and international partners, the country aims to develop more sustainable migration policies while contributing to stability, economic growth, and social cohesion.
