Libya Launches Major Infrastructure Project with New Bridge in Sirte

Libya has begun construction on a new bridge in Sirte, named “Shuhada Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous” (Martyrs of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous), in honor of the fighters who led the 2016 battle against ISIS.

The bridge, located over the Al-Zaafran roundabout, is part of a larger effort to modernize Sirte’s infrastructure and improve urban mobility.

The project was initiated under direct orders from the General Command, with oversight by Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund.

The construction is being carried out by French engineering firms, marking an important collaboration between Libya and international partners in post-war rebuilding efforts.

The Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous operation, launched on May 5, 2016, was a seven-month military campaign that successfully eliminated ISIS from Sirte. The battle ended on December 6, 2016, restoring control of the city but leaving behind significant destruction to its infrastructure. Naming the bridge after the operation serves as a tribute to those who fought and sacrificed their lives for Sirte’s liberation.

Sirte has endured years of devastation due to conflict, making infrastructure projects like this essential for its recovery. The new bridge aims to enhance traffic flow, support economic activity, and contribute to the broader reconstruction of the city.

Libya has been making gradual progress in infrastructure redevelopment, despite ongoing political divisions.

The construction of the “Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous Martyrs” Bridge reflects a determination to rebuild and modernize the country’s key urban centers. As Sirte undergoes redevelopment, this bridge will not only serve as a vital transport link but also a lasting symbol of the city’s resilience.
