The Chairman of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh, met with Iraq’s Ambassador to Libya, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, on Tuesday to explore ways of strengthening cooperation in the field of elections. The discussions focused on exchanging expertise, enhancing institutional capacities, and improving the efficiency of electoral processes in both countries.

The meeting took place at the HNEC headquarters in Tripoli and underscored the importance of building collaborative ties between Libya and Iraq in managing elections. According to a statement by the HNEC on its official Facebook page, both parties highlighted the need for sharing experiences in election management and voter engagement to promote democratic practices.

Ambassador Al-Sahaf praised the efforts of the Libyan electoral body in advancing democracy despite the challenges facing the country. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to providing technical support and training opportunities aimed at bolstering the HNEC’s readiness for future electoral events. The ambassador also emphasised the significance of ongoing communication between the two nations to foster mutual understanding and learning in electoral administration.

For his part, Emad Al-Sayeh stressed the value of international partnerships in developing transparent and credible election processes. He noted that Libya is keen to benefit from Iraq’s electoral experience as it prepares for upcoming municipal and national elections.

The two officials agreed on the importance of continuing joint efforts, particularly in areas such as technical assistance and logistical support. They expressed hope that these collaborations would contribute to successful elections that reflect the democratic aspirations of both Libyan and Iraqi citizens.

This meeting comes as part of HNEC’s broader strategy to engage with international electoral institutions to strengthen its role in ensuring fair and transparent elections in Libya.
