Libyan political activist and blogger Hossam Al-Gamati announced on Wednesday that his brother, Mohamed, an oil engineer, was arrested in Tripoli by an unidentified security force. The reasons for his detention remain unclear.

Tripoli is under the Government of National Unity, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba.

Al-Gamati stated that his brother was taken from his home by armed individuals who allegedly raided the property under false pretenses. He claimed that they searched Mohamed’s mobile phone, seemingly looking for incriminating material. He insisted that his brother had no political affiliations and was detained solely because of their family ties.

“Mohamed is suffering from a serious illness and is undergoing treatment. His health condition makes it difficult for his captors to fabricate charges against him,” Al-Gamati said.

The activist revealed that he had intentionally distanced himself from his brother to protect him and their family. Speaking in a video posted on social media, he accused the authorities of using intimidation tactics.

“This is meant to instill fear in people, but it won’t work. Our struggle will only grow stronger. Even if they kill my children or my entire family, we will not surrender,” he stated.

Al-Gamati is widely known for his outspoken criticism of Libya’s ruling elite and armed groups.

He frequently shares reports exposing corruption within government institutions and highlights issues related to the International Criminal Court. His recent remarks suggest that he sees his brother’s arrest as part of a broader campaign to silence dissent.
