On Thursday, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, stated that Egypt and Greece have signed an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement between the two countries. Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Dendias, arrived earlier today in Egypt in an official visit to review the agreement on demarcating the maritime borders between Egypt and Greece.

In a joint press conference, Shoukry said that the agreement aims to enable Egypt and Greece to maximize the benefit from the natural resources found within the EEZs.

The Egyptian FM pointed out that the agreement touches upon ongoing oil and gas cooperation, as the two countries are members of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum.

He added that the signing of the deal came after rounds of negotiations between Cairo and Athens. He confirmed that they have fully coordinated over regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Shoukry explained that the agreement comes within the framework of preserving and confronting threats in the eastern Mediterranean. This is in reference to Turkey, which is attempting to violate international law, and the foundations of international legitimacy, through its maritime border agreement with the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA).
