On Wednesday, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued a stern warning regarding the rapidly escalating violence in the capital, Tripoli, and the growing military mobilizations in other regions of the country. In a statement released Monday, the Mission expressed deep concern that the situation could quickly spiral out of control.

UNSMIL condemned the intensifying armed clashes and reports of civilian casualties, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire across all affected areas. The Mission emphasized the urgent need to establish safe corridors to evacuate civilians trapped in high-conflict zones and to prevent further loss of life.

The statement also urged all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and to engage without delay in meaningful dialogue aimed at resolving their differences through peaceful means.

The UN warned that attacks targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure could constitute crimes under international law and reiterated that those responsible for such violations will be held accountable.

UNSMIL confirmed it is in active communication with parties on the ground, as well as with regional and international partners, to de-escalate tensions and contain the crisis.

The Mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all mediation efforts and reiterated its readiness to facilitate dialogue and help broker a ceasefire before the situation deteriorates further.

The Mission’s warning comes amid growing fears that renewed fighting in Tripoli could undermine fragile progress toward political stability in Libya and derail recent efforts to prepare the ground for national elections and institutional reunification.

As military convoys and reinforcements continue to pour into the capital, residents remain caught in the crossfire, while international observers call for restraint, responsibility, and a swift return to dialogue.
