Russian Mission to the UN Calls for a Cessation of Hostilities in Libya

On Tuesday, the Russian mission to the United Nations called for a cessation of hostilities in Libya and the restoration of sustainable and integrated state institutions, including the security services.

On its official Twitter account, the mission said that it is communicating with all parties in Libya to reach a political solution.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis aim to restore the state and its sovereignty, which was flagrantly violated as a result of the NATO adventure in 2011, in violation of the UN Security Council resolution.

Civil war broke out in Libya after the toppling of long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, who was later killed. Numerous militias are fighting for power and influence in the country, with the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord backed by Turkey, Qatar and Italy. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, France and Russia are backing the eastern-based Libyan National Army, headed by military commander Khalifa Haftar.
