A delegation from Libya’s Ministry of Defence, affiliated with the Government of National Unity (GNU), has conducted an official visit to Italy aimed at strengthening military cooperation, particularly in the field of training.

According to a statement issued by the GNU Ministry of Defence in Tripoli, the delegation was headed by the Assistant to the Chief of General Staff. The group toured an airbase on the Italian island of Sardinia, where they reviewed ongoing practical training programmes offered by the Italian military.

The visit concluded with a meeting between the head of the Libyan delegation and the Chief of the General Staff of the Italian Army. No further details were disclosed regarding the discussions or any agreements reached.

This visit follows a previous engagement on 7 May, when a high-level Italian military delegation visited the Libyan Air Defence College in Misrata. That group included the Chairman of the Libya–Italy Relations Committee and the Director of Training at the Italian Ministry of Defence.

The repeated interactions signal deepening defence ties between Libya and Italy, particularly in technical and training fields. Italy remains one of Libya’s key European partners in defence, migration cooperation, and stabilisation efforts.

However, the lack of transparency around the details of these meetings has drawn scrutiny, especially given the complex internal security dynamics in Libya and the presence of multiple armed factions.

Analysts suggest that international cooperation in military training could help improve professionalism within Libya’s armed forces, provided it is implemented with inclusivity and long-term strategic vision.
