The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced early Sunday the reopening of the gas pipeline supplying the Al-Zawiya power plant, a move expected to significantly stabilize electricity across the country.

In an official statement, GECOL confirmed that restoring the gas flow will help ensure steady power supply to regions connected to the national grid.

The announcement comes just hours after the company had warned of a potential nationwide blackout due to the shutdown of four generating units at the plant — units one, four, five, and six — after a group forcibly closed the gas line.

According to GECOL, technical teams immediately began the process of restarting the units step by step, preparing them for reintegration into the national grid and restoring production capacity to normal levels.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining network stability and reducing power cuts. It also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders whose cooperation made the reopening of the line and resumption of operations possible.

The Al-Zawiya power station is one of Libya’s most important electricity providers, and its disruption has previously led to widespread outages across the country.
