Belgassem Haftar, Director of Libya’s Reconstruction and Development Fund, paid an official visit to Athens on Sunday at the invitation of the Greek government, where he met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis, Deputy Foreign Minister, and senior Greek officials.
The visit underscored Libya’s growing efforts to expand international partnerships and attract foreign investment into its reconstruction and development projects.
Talks between the two sides focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including infrastructure, housing, energy, and digital modernization. A central outcome of the meetings was the agreement to establish a clear timetable for visits by Greek business leaders and representatives of major companies to Libya.
These delegations will explore opportunities to participate in large-scale development and reconstruction projects overseen by Libya’s Reconstruction Fund, which has been tasked with rebuilding cities and restoring critical infrastructure damaged by years of conflict.
Haftar emphasized Libya’s commitment to building strong partnerships with regional allies and highlighted the fund’s role as a gateway for international companies seeking to invest in the country. Greek officials, for their part, expressed readiness to mobilize private sector involvement in Libya’s recovery, noting that stability and development in Libya directly contribute to security and prosperity in the wider Mediterranean.
At the conclusion of the visit, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a strategic partnership, ensuring that the agreements and discussions held in Athens translate into concrete projects on the ground.
Officials stressed that closer cooperation would not only meet mutual development needs but also reinforce stability and sustainable growth in the region.
