Moscow: No Alternative for Political Solution in Libya

On Thursday, the Russian Ambassador to Egypt, Georgy Borisenko, revealed that Egypt and Russia have similar point of views regarding the status quo in Libya and Syria.

In a press statement, Borisenko said that his country is making continuous consultations with Turkey to reach a permanent ceasefire in Libya and end the state of conflict in the North African country.

He also stressed that reaching a political solution is the only way out of current tensions between the two Libyan sides. He also expressed Moscow’s desire for Libya to enjoy full sovereignty.

Borisenko then highlighted the importance of starting the peace process in the country.

On Friday, the GNA, which is based in the west of the country, announced on Friday morning a ceasefire across Libya. It also called for the demilitarisation of the contested strategic cities of Sirte and Al-Jufrah, which are controlled by the Libyan National Army.

Libya is suffering a severe division between two factions; the Libyan Parliament supported by the Libyan National Army (LNA) and led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in the east, and the GNA led by Fayez Al-Sarraj. The latter is internationally recognised but is not accepted by the Parliament.

Hundreds were killed in continuous battles between the LNA and the forces of the GNA over the past year.
