Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid will meet in Benghazi, eastern Libya, for a high-profile friendly match as part of efforts to promote the city’s international sporting presence.
The game, scheduled for 10 October 2025 at 6 p.m. local time, will take place at Benghazi International Stadium under the banner of the “Reconstruction Cup.” The initiative is being led by the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund.
According to the Fund, Director of International Cooperation Aqila Al-Abbar signed two formal agreements with both Inter Milan of Italy and Atlético Madrid of Spain. The agreements pave the way for a rare sporting event in Libya, where major international fixtures have been largely absent due to years of conflict and instability.
The Fund’s Director General, Belgassem Haftar, has personally overseen the arrangements, describing the initiative as a symbolic step to showcase Benghazi’s resilience and cultural revival. The upcoming clash between two of Europe’s leading football clubs is expected to draw significant local and regional attention, highlighting Benghazi as a host city capable of staging international-level events.
Organisers say the “Reconstruction Cup” aims not only to provide entertainment but also to send a message of stability and renewal. The event will feature security coordination, infrastructure upgrades at the stadium, and promotional activities designed to attract fans from across Libya and beyond.
This will be the first time in years that two elite European clubs compete on Libyan soil, raising hopes that the country could gradually return to the global football calendar. For many in Benghazi, the match is seen as more than just a game – it is a sign of the city’s determination to re-establish itself on the world stage.
