On Sunday, Libya’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced it had found 465 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections to 13,423

In a statement, the NCDC also reported a death case in the last 24 hours, which raises the death toll to 232 in the country.

In Libya, the number of recovered cases increased to 1,410 after 77 new patients healed from the virus. This is the highest number of recoveries registered in a single day since the outbreak of the disease.

On Wednesday, the Government of National Accord (GNA) announced a four-day complete lockdown in the capital Tripoli amid rising number of coronavirus cases.

It added that mass gatherings and all religious and national festivals will remain suspended during this period.

Notably, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that it is alarmed over rapidly escalating rates of coronavirus in Libya. It said that over the past 2 weeks, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Libya has more than doubled; adding that given the acute shortages of tests and laboratory capacity, the real number of cases is likely to be much higher.

More than 25 million cases have been reported worldwide, while over 17.5 million patients have recovered, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
