The Italian news agency Nova reported that the United States is intensifying diplomatic pressure on Libya’s rival authorities in Tripoli and Benghazi, with Washington urging Libyan actors to seize recent political and economic openings to move toward unified and stable state institutions.
Masad Boulos, Senior Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, said the United States is leading international coordination efforts on Libya, stressing that Libyan leaders must take advantage of the current momentum to advance national reconciliation and institutional reform. His remarks followed a joint statement issued by ten countries — Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States — expressing support for extending the mandate of the UN mission and endorsing the UN-led roadmap.
Boulos noted that Washington had convened the ten signatory countries to reaffirm their backing for “the Libyan people’s calls for unity, stability, and prosperity.” He said the international community must build on “recent positive steps,” including the renewal of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the agreement reached by Libyan institutions on a “joint development program” to regulate development spending funded by oil revenues.
“The United States will remain at the forefront of efforts to overcome divisions and achieve lasting peace in Libya,” Boulos said, adding that Washington will continue to lead diplomatic efforts to help Libyan parties “build on this momentum” toward a strong, prosperous, and unified state.
The joint statement underscored the need to unify Libya’s institutions and move toward elections, highlighting progress in military coordination between eastern and western forces and calling for further steps to integrate security structures. It also stressed the importance of strengthening Libya’s key economic bodies — including the National Oil Corporation, the Central Bank of Libya, and the Audit Bureau — as pillars of sovereignty and financial stability.
The ten countries welcomed the appointment of Masoud Suleiman as chairman of the National Oil Corporation, as well as the agreement between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State on a 20-billion-dinar “joint development program” aimed at improving economic policy coordination and directing investments. The statement emphasized that deeper economic and security integration remains essential for Libya’s long-term stability and prosperity, while Washington reaffirmed its commitment to leading diplomatic efforts to bridge divisions and support durable peace.
