Libya Launches Major Security Campaign to Curb Irregular Migration in the South

Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Authority has intensified field patrols across southern cities and valleys as part of a new security plan aimed at curbing irregular migration and tightening control over the country’s southern borders.

According to an official statement, the ongoing efforts follow directives issued by the head of the Authority, Major General Salah Mahmoud Al-Khweifi, with direct supervision from the Director of the Southern Region Branches, Major General Abdelrahman Al-Ansari. The leadership called for expanding operations across the south, emphasizing its strategic depth and the need for constant vigilance to protect national security.

The Authority confirmed that its teams continue to conduct regular patrols, monitor movement in border areas, and apply legal measures against violators. Officials say the campaign aims to reduce illegal crossings, prevent security breaches, and reinforce stability at one of the country’s most sensitive frontiers.

The renewed push highlights Libya’s broader efforts to secure its southern region — a major transit zone for migrant flows — and to strengthen state control amid rising regional pressures.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.

Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
