Libya inaugurated a major aviation infrastructure project on Wednesday, as the Parliament-designate government launched the Al-Zawiya Commercial International Airport in the Ibn Shuaib district, south of Zawiya. The ceremony was led by Interior Minister Essam Abu Zariba and Transport Minister Abdelhakim Al-Ghuzwi, in the presence of lawmakers, community leaders, and officials from the western region.
The new airport is positioned as a strategic economic gateway for western Libya, designed to expand commercial activity, attract investment, and strengthen internal connectivity. In his speech at the event, the Interior Minister said the opening represents a “national milestone” that reflects the unity of Libyans and the determination to build modern infrastructure capable of supporting long-term development.
He stressed that the project will generate jobs, stimulate trade, and support economic diversification, noting that the airport is intended to serve all Libyans regardless of region. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the project according to international aviation standards and under direct state supervision.
According to officials, the airport forms part of a broader national plan to modernise Libya’s transport network and improve logistics capabilities across the western region. The government says the goal is to enhance commercial routes, support industrial zones, and provide new facilities tailored to cargo operations, passenger movement, and future aviation expansions.
The launch follows the decision issued by the Prime Minister Osama Hammad last November under Resolution No. 415/2025, which approved the establishment of an international air gateway in Al-Zawiya. The government views the facility as a key infrastructure asset that will act as a logistical hub and a catalyst for economic activity.
Local leaders described the airport as a message of confidence from the people of Al-Zawiya and the western region, emphasising their support for national development and reconstruction efforts aimed at securing a stable future for all Libyans.
