The Speaker of the Libyan Parliament, Ageela Saleh held a meeting on Tuesday with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in eastern Libya. They discussed efforts aimed at advancing the political process, resume political dialogue, and bring an end to the conflict.

In a statement, Parliament Spokesperson, Abdullah Belhaq, said that Saleh called on Borell to support the ceasefire announcement in addition to freezing the state’s oil revenues until the formation of a unified authority in Libya. The Speaker also stressed the necessity of putting pressure on all Libyan parties to end the political crisis, in order to alleviate the suffering of the Libyan people.

BorrelI welcomed Saleh’s commitment to implement a ceasefire, and end the oil blockade.
He also reiterated the EU’s strong and unwavering commitment to preserve Libya’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and national unity.

The EU’s representative’s visit took place shortly after the agreement between the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord’s (GNA) Prime Minister, Fayez Al-Sarraj, and Parliament Speaker Saleh. The agreement calls for a ceasefire, the expulsion of foreign fighters, a lifting of the oil blockade, and the resumption of the political process.

In the meeting with Al-Sarraj and his cabinet members, Borrell also discussed other issues of common concern, including illegal immigration management and the recent public demonstrations. He also met with the Chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Mustafa Sanalla, to discuss joint international efforts to prevent a collapse of Libya’s oil sector.
