Libyan MP: Turkey Must Expel Mercenaries, Abide by Arms Embargo Before Discussing Peace Talks

Libyan Parliament Member, Saeed Imgheib, stated that before speaking of any return to the political track, Turkey must be obligated to expel its mercenaries and immediately halt the flow of weapons to Libya.

The parliamentarian said: “At a time when there is talk about an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation, and an upcoming political settlement under the auspices of the United Nations, Turkey continues to deliver weapons, mercenaries, and even terrorists to the two airbases of Misrata and Al-Watiya, and the cities under its control. What does that mean?”

“It means Turkey has not found anyone, in the parties backing the next agreement, who will achieve its interests. It will therefore resort to two options, the first of which is the division of Libya, which was indicated in the statement of the US Embassy in Tripoli stating that the United States of America rejects any attempt to divide Libya. The second option for Turkey is to continue fighting and igniting a war in Libya,” Imgheib explained.

“Since the principle of dividing the country is rejected, at least locally and by neighbouring countries like Egypt, international sanctions are likely to be imposed. They may amount to fighting the rejectionist party, thus endangering the lives of civilians. This will be particularly true for cities that have mercenary camps and weapons stores”, he added.

Ankara continues to escalate its involvement in the Libyan conflict through its support to the Government of National Accord (GNA). This is despite Turkey participating in and agreeing to the results of the Berlin Conference, in which foreign states active in Libya agreed to uphold the UN arms embargo.
