Libya’s Government appointed by the House of Representatives has declared a state of maximum readiness across security, emergency, and service institutions in anticipation of an incoming desert low-pressure system expected to affect large parts of the country in the coming hours.
The government stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to mitigate risks associated with severe weather conditions, including strong winds, dust storms, and reduced visibility, which could pose a threat to public safety and disrupt essential services.
For his part, Deputy Interior Minister Faraj Egheim, who heads the Emergency and Rapid Response Committee, confirmed that all security bodies and affiliated agencies had been instructed to remain on full alert. He said personnel have been ordered not to leave their duty stations, while senior officials were directed to supervise the direct implementation of emergency plans within their respective jurisdictions.
The measures include intensifying security deployments at key checkpoints and sensitive locations, restricting vehicle movement to cases of absolute necessity, and ensuring the readiness of hospitals and emergency medical services. Authorities have also taken steps to secure facilities belonging to companies involved in infrastructure, construction, and development projects, in order to prevent potential damage or service interruptions.
In parallel, emergency instructions were issued to several ministries and institutions, including local governance, health, transport, water resources, electricity, and communications. Humanitarian and emergency-response bodies, such as the Libyan Red Crescent, the National Safety Authority, and ambulance and emergency services in eastern Libya, were placed on full standby to respond to any incidents until weather conditions improve.
According to the National Center of Meteorology, western regions are expected to be affected by the desert low on Sunday, accompanied by active easterly to southeasterly winds that may raise dust and sand, leading to poor visibility and hazardous travel conditions.
Authorities urged citizens to follow official guidance, avoid unnecessary travel, and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property. The government emphasized that the heightened alert will remain in place until the weather system passes and stability is restored, stressing that preparedness and coordination are essential to minimizing potential damage and ensuring public safety.
