Operation IRINI has monitored the landing of 80 military aircrafts in Libya, since May, Al-Arabiya reported on Tuesday. The IRINI fleet has submitted 14 reports on violations of the UN arms embargo on Libya.

IRINI is a naval mission launched by the European Union in May. Its objective is to monitor the implementation of the UN arms embargo imposed on Libya and prevent the flow of weapons to the country.

In a press statement, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said that the declaration of the ceasefire is a new opportunity for a settlement in Libya, and that it must be seized. He added that IRINI was a tangible sign of European contribution to resolving the Libyan crisis, as well as a way of combating the illegal smuggling of petroleum products from Libya.

Earlier, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, accused Turkey of “continuing to obstruct the efforts of NATO to cooperate with the EU in imposing an arms embargo issued by the UN to stop arms flow to Libya.”
