The National Oil Corporation is continuing its nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at planting one million trees as part of its broader strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and strengthen environmental sustainability.
The initiative forms a central pillar of the corporation’s environmental and climate framework, which seeks to mitigate the ecological footprint of oil and gas operations while improving air quality in communities located near production sites. The company recently confirmed the completion of tree-planting activities in the geographical area surrounding the Abu Tifl oil field, one of the locations prioritized under the project.
According to the corporation’s Sustainable Development Department, more than 50 percent of the targeted one million trees have already been planted. The campaign has extended to several regions adjacent to operational fields and facilities throughout the country. Work is set to continue in the coming weeks to ensure the full target is achieved within the planned timeframe.
Officials say the initiative is designed not only to offset emissions generated by hydrocarbon production but also to enhance biodiversity, combat desertification, and reinforce long-term environmental resilience. Expanding green spaces around industrial sites is expected to help absorb carbon emissions and improve living conditions for nearby populations.
Chairman of the Board, Engineer Masoud Suleiman, is closely overseeing the implementation of the campaign. He has stressed the importance of completing the project promptly, noting that it reflects the corporation’s commitment to responsible resource management and sustainable development. Suleiman emphasized that environmental stewardship must go hand in hand with maintaining production levels that support Libya’s national economy.
The tree-planting drive signals a broader shift within Libya’s oil sector toward integrating sustainability into core operations. While hydrocarbons remain the backbone of the country’s revenues, the National Oil Corporation is positioning environmental responsibility as a long-term priority.
