Libya’s coast guard has rescued 32 migrants of various nationalities from an irregular migration boat off the coast of Tobruk, in the latest operation highlighting ongoing maritime migration challenges in the region.
According to official information, the coast guard units affiliated with the General Command of the Libyan Armed Forces intercepted the vessel and safely brought the migrants ashore.
The emergency team of the Libyan Red Crescent in Tobruk responded immediately to the incident, heading to the disembarkation point at Tobruk Naval Base to assist those rescued.
Upon arrival, Red Crescent teams provided first aid and essential humanitarian support to the migrants, as part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to assist vulnerable groups and respond to emergency situations.
The Libyan Red Crescent confirmed that the intervention was supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), within the framework of continued cooperation aimed at strengthening humanitarian response and ensuring migrants receive necessary care.
The operation also included monitoring the migrants’ health conditions and providing protection assistance following their rescue at sea.
Libya remains a key transit point for migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, with rescue operations frequently carried out by local authorities and humanitarian organisations amid ongoing risks linked to irregular migration routes.
The latest rescue underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between Libyan authorities and international partners to address humanitarian needs and improve safety conditions for migrants undertaking dangerous sea journeys.
