Libyan authorities have detained around 200 irregular migrants during a large-scale security operation in the eastern city of Ajdabiya, as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration and strengthen public security.

The operation was carried out by the Department for Combating Illegal Migration under directives from its head, Salah Mahmoud Al-Khififi, with oversight from regional officials responsible for the south-eastern and central areas.

Security teams conducted inspections across a range of commercial and service locations, including markets and shops, targeting individuals suspected of violating immigration laws. Officials said those detained were of various nationalities and were found to have breached entry and residency regulations.

According to authorities, several detainees were unable to present official identification documents or proof of legal status within Libya. All individuals were taken into custody and transferred to designated detention centres in Ajdabiya.

The operation was supervised locally by Ibrahim Mohamed Al-Daqn, head of the Ajdabiya branch. Legal procedures have been initiated against those detained, with further administrative and health checks to be conducted in accordance with national regulations.

Officials said the campaign forms part of broader measures aimed at restoring order and addressing the challenges posed by irregular migration. Libya remains a key transit route for migrants seeking to reach Europe, making migration management a central issue for authorities.

The agency emphasised that such operations are conducted within the framework of Libyan law and international standards, with a focus on maintaining security while ensuring appropriate treatment of migrants.

Authorities have pledged to continue similar campaigns in other regions, as part of a coordinated strategy to reduce illegal migration flows and enforce compliance with residency laws.

The latest operation reflects ongoing pressure on Libyan institutions to manage migration effectively amid complex political and economic conditions.
