A powerful sandstorm has hit the city of Tobruk in Libya, forcing the suspension of classes and disrupting daily life as strong winds and dense dust reduced visibility across the region.
Local authorities announced the closure of all educational institutions on Wednesday and Thursday as a precautionary measure to protect students and teaching staff. The decision comes amid worsening weather conditions driven by high-speed winds carrying heavy dust and debris.
According to warnings issued by the National Center of Meteorology, wind activity is expected to continue across large parts of the country, with speeds reaching up to 70 km/h in some areas. These conditions have led to significant dust storms, sharply reducing horizontal visibility, particularly in eastern regions, along with a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Weather authorities indicated that conditions are likely to gradually improve starting Thursday evening as wind speeds begin to ease.
Nationwide Weather Instability
The storm in Tobruk is part of a broader wave of unstable weather affecting much of Libya. Images and videos circulating on social media show the intensity of the storm inside the city, with dust covering streets and buildings and disrupting daily movement.
Municipal officials have urged residents to exercise caution, limit unnecessary travel, and follow safety guidelines to reduce exposure to hazardous conditions.
