Intissar Shneib, head of the Women and Child Affairs Committee at the Libyan House of Representatives, took part in a high-level meeting in Tunisia focused on strengthening women’s rights and combating violence.

Shneib was joined by committee members Halima Al-Aeb and Souad Al-Shali at the gathering, which was organised by the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation and brought together legal experts, rights advocates, civil society representatives, and members of the Libyan High Council of State.

Discussions centred on strengthening legal frameworks to better protect women, with participants stressing the need for a comprehensive law to combat violence against women. Such legislation, attendees said, should ensure effective legal protection while reinforcing prevention measures and accountability mechanisms.

The meeting also reviewed ways to modernise related legislation and improve enforcement tools, alongside an exchange of expertise and perspectives among participants. The aim was to develop practical recommendations that advance women’s rights and enhance their safety within society.

The talks reflect ongoing regional efforts to address gender-based violence and align national legal systems with international standards, particularly through cooperation between lawmakers, civil society, and specialised organisations.
