Five members of Libya’s House of Representatives participated in the opening of the first extraordinary session of the seventh legislative term of the Pan-African Parliament, held in Midrand, South Africa.

According to parliamentary spokesperson Abdullah Bliheg, the session began with a keynote address delivered by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, representing the African Union leadership. The opening proceedings also included the swearing-in of new members, marking the formal start of the Parliament’s new legislative cycle.

The Libyan delegation included MPs Salem Gnan, Youssef Al-Fakhri, Abdel Qader Yahya, Saleh Ghalma, and Asmaa Al-Khoja. Their participation highlights Libya’s continued engagement with continental institutions despite ongoing domestic political challenges.

A key development during the session is the candidacy of Youssef Al-Fakhri for a position within the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament. Elections for the Bureau are expected to take place during the current session, making this gathering particularly important for Libya’s role within the institution.

The seventh legislative term officially commenced this week and is scheduled to run until the end of the month. The agenda includes the election of parliamentary leadership, alongside discussions on major issues affecting African countries, including governance, economic development, and regional cooperation.
