Libya has launched a direct maritime shipping route between China and the eastern city of Benghazi, marking a significant step toward strengthening international trade and supporting the country’s economic recovery.

The inauguration ceremony coincided with the arrival of the first cargo vessel operating on the new route and was attended by Belgasem Haftar, Ma Xulian, local officials, and representatives from the transport and logistics sectors.

Speaking at the event, Belgasem Haftar, head of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, described the new shipping line as a strategic development that reinforces Benghazi’s role as a major commercial hub and a key gateway for trade and reconstruction in Libya. He noted that improving maritime connectivity is essential for accelerating the flow of goods and supporting ongoing development projects across the country.

The direct route is expected to significantly reduce shipping times and logistical costs, making it easier to transport goods between China and Libya. This is likely to enhance supply chains, facilitate imports of construction materials, and support infrastructure and industrial development efforts.

Ambassador Ma Xulian emphasized Benghazi’s growing importance in Libya’s trade landscape, expressing China’s readiness to expand cooperation in various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, and investment. He noted that the new shipping route reflects a practical step toward deepening economic ties and strengthening bilateral relations.

Officials see the initiative as part of broader efforts to reintegrate Libya into global trade networks and attract foreign investment. Improved logistics and transport infrastructure are considered critical components in rebuilding the national economy and ensuring long-term stability.
