Turkey-Russia Close to Deal on Libya

On Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, said Turkey and Russia were close to reaching an agreement on a ceasefire and a political process in Libya.

Turkey and Russia are the main power brokers in Libya’s war, and back opposing sides. Ankara supports the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), while Moscow backs the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The GNA controls the west of the country, including Tripoli, while the LNA controls eastern and southern Libya. In August, the GNA declared a ceasefire which the LNA agreed to.

The GNA Prime Minister, Fayez Al-Sarraj, announced he will resign at the end of October this year. “I declare my sincere desire to hand over my duties to the next executive authority, no later than the end of October,” he said in a televised speech.
