Libyan security forces have managed to set free a number of Egyptian workers who had been abducted by human traffickers. The workers were repatriated to Egypt, according to MENA news agency.

The news agency added that the Egyptian Intelligence Service (GIS) and Libyan authorities cooperated during this operation. The Egyptian newspaper Awan Masr reported that six Egyptians were freed after being kidnapped in the region of Bani Walid, south east of Tripoli. Their kidnappers had demanded a ransom of 30,000 Dinars (about 5,000 USD) for each person.

In 2016, joint Egyptian-Libyan efforts led to the freeing of 23 Egyptian nationals who were kidnapped in the coastal region of Brega. Foreign workers have been subjected to kidnappings and ransoms in recent years.
