SOHR: 129 Syrian Mercenaries Killed in Libya

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced on Thursday that the number of Syrian fighters who have been killed in Libya’s ongoing conflict has increased to 129.

In a statement, the SOHR said that the casualties come from the following Syrian armed groups: al-Mu’tasim Division, Sultan Murad, Suqur Al-Shamal Brigade, Al-Hamzat and Suleiman Shah.

According to reliable SOHR sources, the Syrian mercenaries were killed in clashes on the Salah Al-Din frontline in the south of Tripoli, the Al-Ramlah frontline near Tripoli Airport, the Al-Hadabah Project area, Misrata and other areas in Libya.

The SOHR claims that Turkey has since lowered the salaries of Syrian fighters who volunteered to fight in Libya. This comes as the number of Syrians fighters exceeded the number requested by Turkey, totaling 6,000 fighters.

SOHR sources reported that the number of Syrian recruits who arrived in Tripoli up to date has reached nearly 4,750, while nearly 1,900 others have arrived in Turkey to undergo training.

Tensions are flaring across the region as a result of the Libyan crisis and the energy race in the eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey is heavily involved. The situation was exacerbated after the Turkish Parliament approved President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s proposal to send Turkish military forces to Tripoli in support of the Government of National Accord (GNA).
