A new cultural initiative aimed at promoting theatre and celebrating Libya’s rich heritage has been launched in the eastern city of Shahat, with organisers announcing the first edition of the “Cyrene Theatre Days” festival.

The event is being organised by the Cyrene Theatre Group and seeks to support Libya’s local theatre movement while strengthening the presence of performing arts in public spaces. Organisers say the initiative will focus on highlighting Libya’s cultural and historical heritage through theatrical productions inspired by local traditions and collective memory.

The inaugural edition will be held under the theme “Bringing Heritage to the Stage in Open Spaces”, reflecting a vision that combines artistic expression with historical and cultural settings. The festival aims to present performances in open-air venues with historical significance, creating a direct connection between theatre, place, and national identity.

According to the organisers, the project is designed to encourage creative engagement with Libya’s heritage by transforming cultural narratives into live performances accessible to a wider audience. The initiative also seeks to promote greater public participation in cultural activities and expand opportunities for artistic expression outside conventional theatre venues.

The announcement has been welcomed by theatre practitioners, artists, and cultural observers, many of whom described the festival as a valuable addition to Libya’s cultural landscape. Supporters of the initiative believe it could help diversify cultural events across the country and provide a platform for emerging theatrical talent.

Shahat, home to the ancient city of Cyrene, is widely regarded as one of Libya’s most important historical and archaeological destinations. Organisers hope the city’s unique heritage will provide an inspiring backdrop for performances and cultural dialogue.

Further details regarding the festival programme are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The organisers said the first edition will feature a range of theatrical performances, seminars, discussions, and accompanying cultural activities aimed at fostering artistic exchange and celebrating Libya’s historical legacy.
