Germany-Italy Discuss Libya

German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the latest developments in Libya during a telephone call with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

During the call, Merkel and Conte also discussed developments in the eastern Mediterranean, according to media sources. They stressed the need for dialogue between the conflicting parties, in order to solve the crisis.

Last Wednesday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, announced his upcoming resignation. He claimed that he wished to hand over power to a new administration, by the end of October.

This announcement comes amid talks between Libya’s rival factions on ending the country’s civil war. Earlier this month, they had agreed to appoint a new government, and hold elections within 18 months.
