Turkey Vows GNA PM’s Resignation Will Not Affect Relations with Libya

The Turkish Presidential Spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin, has been quoted by the Demirören News Agency to have said on Monday that Fayez Al-Sarraj’s decision to resign from Libya’s Government of National Accord’s (GNA) premiership will not affect the country’s cooperation and agreements with Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that his country is disturbed by Sarraj’s announcement of his intention to resign, but Kalin ensured that Turkish support for the reconciliation government and bilateral agreements between the two countries will continue. Such agreements include a security treaty signed last year.

“These treaties will not be affected by this political period, because they are decisions taken by the government and not by one individual,” Kalin told the Demirören News Agency.

He added that Turkish officials might go to Tripoli in the coming days to discuss developments.

Last Wednesday, Sarraj announced his intention to step down, prompting a flurry of speculation about his reasons for doing so, as well as fears that his resignation could cause further turbulence in a country racked by nearly a decade of chaos.
