Algerian President Says Elections Will Re-Build Libyan State

On Wednesday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that the only way to re-establish and rebuild the Libyan state was to hold legitimate elections, rather than resorting to minor solutions that do not bear fruit.

In press statements, Tebboune added that the crisis had worsened in Libya due to the absence of state institutions. This vacuum existed even before the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. He stated that diplomatic moves would not lead to any significant results for the crisis.

The Algerian President stressed that the most important thing Libya lacked was popular legitimacy. “It is important to hold elections in the country, regardless of the obstacles on the ground,” he stressed.

Tebboune explained that holding elections would allow for the legitimacy required to build other state institutions. According to him, “There will be a parliament, a prime minister, and perhaps a president of the country,” after the elections in Libya.
