The Italian Embassy in Libya welcomed the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) willingness to adhere to a humanitarian truce to counter the threat posed by the COVID-19 virus.

The Embassy called upon the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, to accept the truce by ordering an immediate ceasefire to end hostilities.

“We hope that the humanitarian truce will lead to an agreement and a political solution between the two parties regarding a final ceasefire in the context of the work of the Joint Military Commission (5 + 5),” the Embassy added in a statement on Saturday.

The Italian Embassy also condemned the “continuous and unacceptable strikes” that have hit residential areas in Tripoli and caused civilian casualties during the past days.

Notably, the United Nations, Western and Arab countries demanded on Tuesday that the parties to the Libyan conflict immediately cease hostilities to confront the threat of a potential Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
