Italian FM Calls for International Support for Libyan Dialogue

On Wednesday, the Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, stated it was important to strengthen cooperation between Libya, Italy, and Russia. He called for international support to organise the next Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).

Di Maio said there was already “progress” in the restoration of oil production in parts of Libya, and added that Rome hopes this will spread to the rest of the country.

He stressed the need for the urgent appointment of a new UN Special Envoy for Libya. This position has been vacant since March. “It is no secret that the main obstacle preventing the appointment is the US position,” Di Maio stated.

Libya has been suffering from a power struggle between the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), and the eastern-based Interim Government.

In August, the two sides declared a ceasefire, after numerous international negotiations.
