On Saturday, the United States called on all Libyan parties to stop ongoing hostilities in order to allow local authorities to respond to the unprecedented public health emergency of Covid-19.

The US welcomed the positive response by Libya’s Government of National Accord’s (GNA) and its agreement to a ceasefire, calling on the Libyan National Army (LNA) to follow suit.

In a statement released by the spokeswoman of the State Department, the US added that all Libyan leaders must urgently prioritize the health of the Libyan people, saying it is the only responsible thing to do.

The spokeswoman called on LNA Commander Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar and GNA Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj to suspend military operations, reject foreign interference, and enable health authorities to fight this global pandemic.

The statement indicated that the United States has consistently opposed all military escalation and the ongoing transfer of foreign military equipment and personnel into Libya.

On Tuesday, the United Nations, Western and Arab countries called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Libya to confront a potential Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
