On Friday, the Minister of Defence of the Government of National Accord (GNA) doubted the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed by the parties to the Joint Military Commission (5+5) in Geneva under the supervision of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

According to a post by the GNA Ministry of Defence on Facebook, Al-Nimroush called on the United Nations to “put practical and real guarantees so as not to overthrow what is reached, as happened before in the presence of the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres in April 2019.”

On Friday, participants of Libya’s 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) signed a ceasefire agreement, which entered into force immediately upon signing.

The Libyan rivals agreed to reopen land and air routes, as well as maintain the current state of calm on the front lines, and to avoid further military escalation, said the acting UN envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams. She confirmed that the Libyan parties had agreed that all foreign forces would leave within 90 days of the ceasefire agreement. This would be supervised by the UN.
