Eastern Libyan Government Comment on Bashagha’s Visit to Egypt

The Interior Minister of the Interim Government, Ibrahim Bushnaf, confirmed that his ministry will not be bound by any security agreements to which the Interim Government is not a party.

This came in a letter sent by the Interim Government’s Foreign Affairs Ministry to the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry. The letter confirmed Ibrahim Bushnaf’s acknowledgment of the Egyptian understanding that land outlets such as the Amaad land port are under the authority of the Interim Government.

The Foreign Ministry added that the Interim Government does not bear any security responsibility unless it is a party to a security deal, as it is the party concerned and responsible for this land border and this port between the two brotherly countries.

In 2019, the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and Turkey signed two agreements on military cooperation and maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea that exacerbates Ankara’s disputes over energy exploration with other countries.

The military agreement aims at ensuring the protection of Turkey’s interests in Libya, strengthening ties between the two countries, and allowing Ankara’s direct intervention in the North African country.

Turkey backs the Tripoli-based GNA, while Egypt supports the Eastern-based Interim Government.
