The Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Ahmed Maiteeq discussed the results of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in Tunisia. He stated that the most important outcome of the meeting was the setting of the date for the next general election, which is expected to be 24 December 2021.

Regarding the date of the resumption of negotiations, he explained, “We have not been informed of the date yet, because of logistical obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Commenting on the fact that anyone who has held a political position since 2014 will not be eligible for the sovereign positions in Libya, he stated, “We believe that we are passing through a phase in which everyone must be absorbed and move away from political isolation.”

He also stressed that the military situation in Libya is currently “in complete calm,” adding “We hope to reopen flights throughout Libya.”

The deputy PM said that the decision to reopen the borders between Tunisia and Libya “supports economic cooperation between the two countries, which has stagnated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Maiteeq also said, “There is a great satisfaction for the Libyan economic actors with this step. There is no one closer than Tunisia in our economic relationship, and we hope that the procedures for Tunisians and Libyans will be facilitated.”
