EU to Discuss Sanctions Against Turkey

The German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, said that European foreign ministers will discuss measures against Turkey as there has been no de-escalation of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.

“Germany has worked hard to facilitate a dialogue between the European Union and Turkey over the past months, but there have been too many provocations. Tensions between Turkey, Cyprus, and Greece have prevented any direct talks”, Maas said before meeting his European Union counterparts. He added, “For this reason, we will talk about what consequences we should draw – also with a view to the EU summit this week.”

Last week, the European Council President, Charles Michel, called on Turkey to stop playing a “cat-and-mouse game” which is akin to offering concessions only to reverse them. France and the European Parliament have said it is time to take action against Ankara.
