The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, held a joint press conference with his Libyan counterpart, Mohamed Siala, who represents the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA).

Lavrov stated that Moscow is interested in providing maximum assistance to Libya. He added that Russia will discuss the efforts made by the international community to support the peace-process in the war-torn country.

Lavrov said the Libyans must now make a “historic” decision to end the civil war. “Libyans must also press ahead with national reconciliation and build a stable and prosperous state. Today’s meeting comes at a very convenient time, as the fate of your country is being decided. The friendly Libyan people are now suffering from the consequences of NATO’s aggression and civil war,” Lavrov told Siala.

Lavrov stressed that efforts must be intensified to reach a settlement in Libya. He added that the slow pace in appointing a special representative of the United Nation Secretary General raises concern.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the goal of the efforts in Libya should be to restore the country’s sovereignty and unity.
